Description

5-HTP is L-5-hydroxytryptophan, a compound derived from the amino acid tryptophan found in protein foods and in the seeds of Griffonia simplicifolia, a plant of African origin. 5-HTP is primarily used to support mood because of its ability to stimulate serotonin, a feel-good neurotransmitter, and melatonin, a neurohormone. It is also used to treat several other health problems involving serotonin.

Comparing 5-HTP to various tricyclic antidepressants has shown that it is as effective and faster acting as the latter, and has fewer side effects. Since serotonin and melatonin are involved in the regulation of the sleep-wake cycle, 5-HTP may improve sleep quality. In addition, research attributes a role in reducing headaches and symptoms of fibromyalgia. Numerous clinical trials have shown that treatment with 5-HTP has resulted in improvements in several characteristic symptoms of fibromyalgia, including pain, morning stiffness, anxiety and fatigue.

Ultimately, people with mood disorders such as depressed mood or anxiety, migraines, fibromyalgia or sleep disorders may benefit from 5-HTP supplementation.

Dosage

Adults: Take one capsule three times daily with food, or as directed by a healthcare professional. To avoid possible gastrointestinal discomfort, gradually increase the dose over a 2-week period. Take for at least 1 week to see beneficial effects on mood and at least 2 weeks for relief of fibromyalgia symptoms.

Adultes : Prendre une capsule trois fois par jour avec de la nourriture, ou selon les recommandations d’un professionnel de la santé.
