Description

The Berberis formula is a blend of extracts of Goldenseal, Goldenseal and Hollyleaf Mahonia, traditionally used in herbal medicine to maintain gastrointestinal health. The main bioactive ingredient in these extracts is berberine. Recent research has shown that berberine prevents bacteria from adhering to the gastric mucosa. Berberine also controls the transport of ions and water in the epithelial cells of the intestine. It helps maintain the balance between electrolytes and water, resulting in an anti-diarrheal effect. Berberine can increase the expression of Na+, H+ exchanger and aquaporin, which improves sodium and water absorption, respectively. Berberine also promotes the formation of proper intestinal epithelial nexus and decreases the permeability of these cells to promote proper functioning of the gastrointestinal barrier. During stages of low contractility, berberine stimulates the jejunum by activating muscarinic receptors, resulting in increased intestinal mobility and a mild laxative effect.

Dosage

Adults: Take one capsule twice daily with meals or as directed by your practitioner. It may take up to one week before you feel the benefits.

Non-medicinal ingredients: Hypromellose, cellulose, silica.
