The body uses sleep to reset itself psychologically and metabolically. The body's circadian rhythm is governed by an internal biological clock with an approximate 24-hour cycle.
Melatonin, the sleep-regulating hormone, requires the essential amino acid L-tryptophan for its conversion. A deficiency of L-tryptophan in the diet can lead to low levels of melatonin and serotonin, which can contribute to sleep difficulties. L-tryptophan is converted to 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), an amino acid intermediate, which is then converted directly to serotonin, followed by conversion to melatonin. Although L-tryptophan is the trigger in the production of serotonin and melatonin, one of the main benefits of 5-HTP is its ability to easily cross the blood-brain barrier. This allows a better synthesis of melatonin and serotonin.
Adults: Take 3 capsules daily, with food, or as directed by a health care practitioner. Take a few hours before or after taking medication or natural health products. As a sleep aid, take 30 to 45 minutes before bedtime.
Non-medicinal ingredients: Hypromellose, microcrystalline cellulose, vegetable stearate, silicon dioxide.
