Description

Provides lysine, an essential amino acid that maintains good health. The essential amino acid L-lysine cannot be synthesized by the body and must be supplied by the diet. It is best known for its ability to reduce the recurrence of infections caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), which mainly affects the skin and mucous membranes. Because HSV requires arginine to replicate, lysine plays an important role in maintaining healthy gums and lip tissue. Lysine competes with arginine for transport into cells and reabsorption in the kidneys, which increases arginine excretion. It also stimulates the activity of arginase, an enzyme responsible for the breakdown of arginine. Studies suggest that lysine supplementation significantly reduces the frequency of HSV recurrences, including cold sores. In addition, a randomized placebo-controlled trial demonstrated that lysine reduced the occurrence, severity and recovery time of recurrent infections.

Dosage

Adults: Take 1 capsule 2 times daily, between meals, or as recommended by a healthcare professional. To help reduce recurrence of HSV infection: Take 2 capsules 3 times daily, between meals, or as recommended by a health care practitioner. Consult a health care practitioner if use continues beyond 6 months.

Non-medicinal ingredients: Vegetarian capsule (hypromellose, water), ascorbyl palmitate.
