Description

S. boulardii has been shown to be particularly beneficial in balancing the gut microbiology. It functions in modulating both innate immunity by activating the complement system and adaptive immunity by stimulating intestinal IgA secretion. In addition, S. boulardii "soluble factors" have been shown to reduce inflammation, achieve a reduction in NF-KappaB and mitogen-activated protein kinase production, and block the expression of inflammatory cytokines, particularly IL-8 which is secreted during E. coli infection. It also enhances the secretion of mucosal immune factors that protect against enteric pathogens, and in dendritic immune cells, it increases IL-10, which limits the nonspecific immune response by downregulating the Th-1 response.

Orally, Saccharomyces boulardii is used to treat and prevent diarrhea, including infectious types such as rotaviral diarrhea in children, diarrhea caused by bacterial overgrowth in adults, traveler's diarrhea, and diarrhea associated with enteral feeding. It is also used orally to prevent and treat diarrhea associated with antibiotics. Saccharomyces boulardii is also used orally and can manage general digestive problems, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBD, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis), Lyme disease, recurrent Clostridium difficile colitis and bacterial overgrowth in short bowel syndrome. It is also used orally and can help with lactose intolerance, urinary tract infections (UTIs), vaginal and Candida (yeast) infections, high cholesterol, hives, cold sores, canker sores and acne in adolescents.

Dosage

Adults: Take 1 capsule 3 times a day.
