Description

Numerous clinical trials have shown that NEM reduces joint pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis, as well as joint pain and stiffness caused by moderate-intensity aerobic exercise. NEM is composed of eggshell membranes (without eggshell), a natural source of glycosaminoglycans found in cartilage, including dermatan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate, hexosamines such as glucosamine, as well as hyaluronic acid and type I collagen. In vitro and in vivo studies indicate that NEM has multiple mechanisms of action, including inhibition of several pro-inflammatory cytokines associated with joint inflammation, such as interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α).

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, NEM was shown to rapidly reduce pain, stiffness, and discomfort after exercise in healthy postmenopausal women. It was also shown to reduce urinary levels of C-terminal cross-linked telopeptide of type II collagen (CTX-II), a biomarker of cartilage breakdown, in both healthy individuals and those with joint disease. Additionally, controlled clinical trials have shown reductions in joint pain and stiffness in individuals with knee osteoarthritis within 10 days of NEM use. Open-label trials have shown persistent improvements in pain and flexibility for multiple joint and connective tissue disorders within 1 week.

Dosage

Adults: 1 capsule daily or as directed by a health care practitioner. Consult a health care practitioner for use beyond 8 weeks.
