Omega-3s are essential for good health. They are part of the cell membranes of each of our cells and serve as building blocks for the production of our body's anti-inflammatory molecules. The North American diet does not provide enough omega-3s to maintain beneficial levels. It would be necessary to eat 3 to 4 servings of oily fish per week.
The omega-6/omega-3 balance in the North American diet is 20:1 to 50:1 (Mariamenatu and Abdu, 2021). It should be 4:1 (5 times too much omega-6 compared to omega-3). Omega-6, which we consume in excess of omega-3, comes from meat or vegetable oils and is used to produce inflammatory molecules.
