Description

Recent research indicates that in a diet high in monounsaturated fatty acids, a combination of phytosterols and fish oils supports cardiovascular health better than fish oils alone. EPA and DHA reduce the breakdown of triglycerides in fat cells while increasing their breakdown in the heart and skeletal muscle. Fish oils cause the assimilation of these fatty acids by the adipose tissue and decrease their arrival to the liver. This prevents their incorporation into very low density lipoproteins (the lipoprotein molecules that transport lipids from the liver to other parts of the body) and leads to a lower production of very low density lipoproteins. The ß-oxidation of fatty acids in the liver, fat, heart and skeletal muscle also increases. This converts fatty acids to acetyl coenzyme A for energy production in the Krebs cycle and reduces the amount of fatty acids available for triglyceride synthesis. Genes that regulate triglyceride synthesis, storage and ß-oxidation are also influenced by phytosterols. In randomized placebo-controlled trials, a daily intake of 1.3 to 1.4 g of EPA and DHA taken in conjunction with phytosterols for 3 to 4 weeks significantly reduced serum triglycerides by approximately 14 to 25% in hyperlipidemic adults.

Dosage
